Some impressions about WWW2009
Before I continue with the ideas about activity cycles I mentioned in my last entry I want to write about some impressions from the 18th International World Wide Web Conference (WWW 2009).
It was the second time I attended this conference (last year’s edition was held in Beijing) and I again enjoyed it very much. It is the most important research conference dealing with web issues and allows to observe among other things where the web and the investigation about it is heading.
A bunch of papers dealed with image search and related issues, the most interesting were
and it seems that we can soon expect serious improvements of the large search engines around this topics (An example for what is already possible is Google Similar Images)
Other interesting papers in relation to the topic of social media were:
It was also interesting to see the power of twitter as live news stream at the conference where many of its participants used this tool to exchange thoughts about the conference and the ongoing presentations. Especially during the plenary sessions this sometimes created a parallel discussion on twitter.
As a side note I want to mention the discussion about the conference website on the conference’s Facebook group (also a novum this year). It seems that the conference site is not very standard conform, what of course is a little bit embarrassing given the strong relations between the confrence and the W3c.
